I think last season you debated whether or not Harden should start over Sefolosha. I think we can put that debate to rest now. Harden is clearly the better player over a much improved Sefolosha but his role is play maker on the second unit. The first unit is marginally better with Harden in it over Sefolosha but that 8 minute stretch in each half when Westbrook goes to the bench (around 4 minutes left in the first quarter to the 8 minute mark of the 2nd quarter) we need Harden to be the captain and playmaker. If he's in the starting lineup, he's got to rest during that stretch, too. Harden has started 2 games this season and the Thunder are 0-2 (Portland and LAC). Last night, Cook started ahead of him and I have to absolutely give Scott Brooks props for that move. Hats off to him.

Thanks for the feedback, Rick. We appreciate all the help we can get. In our usual two-man shows we are ad libbing, but in a one man editorial I usually do read from a script! So good ears. The skill to read from a script but not SOUND like you're reading from a script is definitely one I need to learn, and gives me great respect for the pros! Good suggestion.

Great to hear from you, Mark! You always bring fresh insights to the show. The D is much improved - in fact I saw the Thunder are holding opponents to the second-lowest FG% in the league (tied with the Lakers). And I agree about the passing, too. The assist numbers don't seem to correlate, but I have seen us begin to rotate the ball around the perimeter quickly similar to what the Mavericks and other vet teams do. And the 3 point shooting actually came to mind on Wednesday when I saw KD drive and kick at least 3 times. It seems like we rarely had effective inside-out passing before this year.

Great points Brent. The 'easy schedule' argument isn't valid because since March 1st of last year, the Thunder are 34-8 or 80.9 winning pct. That would equate to 66.4 wins in an 82 game season. Since 2000, only the '06 Mavs won more than 66 games, i.e. it's rare. But yet I totally agree that the team is far better now than they were at the end of last season so are the Thunder better than a 66 win team?? I don't know if I would go that far but I think that they are the best in the league. I think you hit most of the reasons why they are better but I want to also mention team passing. I know that for whatever reason, the number of team assists is down but it really seems like the team passing has improved a lot. And team D. The Thunder are giving up 8 less points a game than last year.

And now on to the second topic. I think it's best for the Thunder to view themselves as winners and envision the banner hanging in the 'Peake (love it Brent!); however, it's better if their opponents think of the Thunder as underdogs. The Thunder need to start every game with the confidence of a winning team, but so do their opponents. That way, we can surprise them. It wouldn't be a surprise to us, but it would be to most of the analysts who keep slighting the Thunder. I'm looking at you, Sir Charles!

Guys, I think you were too easy on RW. He has shown streaks of inspired play before but always returns to his reckless drives and aimless play calling. He would have to go an entire season before I celebrate this signing.

Nate Robinson "so good"?! Ha! Did u watch him at all this year (when he was actually in the game)? He tries to play too much 1 on 1, he will jack 3's up from anywhere, he hits a 3 or two when he gets put in but keep in mind he's playing 2nd and 3rd string players who are down 20+ points with 1 or 2 minutes left. They know the games over, and they prob have orders from their coach "don't foul, let's just get out of here"

Rooting for dallas. Miami is just not my kind of team, but I got respect for the ball they've been playing lately. A podcast on what kind of player we should draft sounds good.

And please let's stick with Russel. He's got areas to improve on but I love how he's about the best scoring and rebpunding pg.

In the 4th quarter of the last 2 games, Brooks has gone with Durant guarding the 5 and Cook guarding the 3 and we are +13. You are right that it makes a worse defensive and rebounding team but it has a lot of advantages that you are missing.
With Cook-Hardent-Durant-Collison on the floor, literally everyone can shoot. They spread the floor and give the ball to Westbrook at the top of the key and he takes his man. The defenders on Cook, Harden and Durant cannot leave to help when Westbrook easily gets to the rim, so you can guarantee that Chandler is rotating, this leaves Collision trailing behind for an easy pass or else Westbrook finishes a layup. We scored on 9 of the first 10 possessions of the 4th quarter in game 4 including 10 points and 2 assists by Westbrook. They can also run a lot of plays out of that lineup including letting Harden be the playmaker and pick and rolls with Durant/Harden/Westbrook. Clearly, you give up a lot at the other end but tell me how Dallas is going to defend it? Obviously, it is team dependent, you could never try this strategy against Miami as they would exploit Cook way too easily.

The other advantage it has is that because Cook is out there, Dallas will try to exploit him defensively, sometimes. This is great for us because anytime they are running plays for Shawn Marion is a time that they aren't running a play for Nowitzki.

I am blaming Brooks, he's got to make a temporary lineup change that gets Perkins out of the rotation and limits Sefolosha's time, too. We spread the floor, get Chandler out of the lane and dominate with our speed and athleticism. By playing Perk and Sefolosha (to a lesser extent), we allow them to hide the age and lack of speed on the wings.

Check out the +/- of the Thunder players during this postseason.
http://on.nba.com/jYg0YA

The first comment that I made after the trade is here:
http://bit.ly/i9HwyH

"It is going to be an interesting trade but if our starting lineup is Durant, Westbrook, Perkins, Ibaka and Sefolosha then we are going to have trouble scoring against good defenses. We saw it tonight. If a team has a rim protecting center, then Westbrook becomes a lot less valuable because he lost two of his shooters that he could dish to."

After the Perkins trade, Westbrook saw a sharp decrease in assists(-0.7), freethrow attempts (-1.0) and rebounds (-0.9) while showing an increase in 3pt attempts (+0.4).
Don't forget, the Thunder played a very easy schedule after the trade, too, but his production still got worse. This decrease in productivity, as I predicted, is because it is more difficult for Westbrook to get in the lane now.

Does this mean that the trade was bad? No, we are better now, as a team, for sure.
I'm just saying that Westbrook looks worse now than he did with Krstic out there, despite being the same player.

I do agree, and most of the time I'm talking about our ability to surge back after a loss as a positive, but here, I actually mean it as a negative. In a seven game series, you don't have the luxury of failure being your most effective motivator. You have to string good performances and victories together.

Great points Blayne! our ability to bounce back has been one of our strengths, but it won't help us if we get down 4-3. Thanks for the comment.

Our lazy start last night was evidence that home court may not be as much a factor as everyone thinks. Seriously, if we can be SuperThunder at Dallas, and, I don't know, the cast of 70's sitcom "Alice" when we hit the home hardwood - then maybe our guys aren't really swayed so much by a raucous, supportive crowd. The only thing that seems to truly motivate them is failure. That's been the consistent theme. You'd be a fool to bet against them in game 4. They use something like game 3 as rocket propellant. Their top performances are so often preceded immediately by their most embarrassing break downs. I wonder if this is the thing we most need to change.

First, Westbrook is a really great pro basketball player. Second, he is blaming someone else for his losing the ball on a dribble, the problem started when the play did not go as predicted and he did not pull out and restart or take an option. Third, no matter what level of basketball you are playing, you never throw a fit about coaching direction and lay blame on someone else, The people your are working for will make that dicision. Forget the last game if you are man enough and step up for the next game.

@Brent You know, I think I like your idea about leaving Dirk open... The Mavs bench scored 53 points in tonight's game. It really may not be a bad idea to dedicate one player to praying that he misses and then crash the boards. I say we do it!

@Spencer - that's a good question. Like the rest of the league, we don't have anyone who can cover a 7 footer who releases the ball from behind his head. I would like to see Serge give it a shot, and if not, then we turn once again to the trusty Collison. We might be better off just leaving Dirk open all the time and making sure no one else can score.

Hey can you do a segment on why oklahomans what to blame Westbrook for all the loses we get. I mean it is like they don't watch the game at all that they just watch espn who always wants to cause drama wether it is la Boston or even Miami. I just think it is funny bc they apparently do not understand the game of basketball.

I agree, Mark. We aren't arguing whether Durant should have been missing on purpose, but whether the coaching staff should be reducing the starters' minutes. I personally didn't think they should, but they obviously did in the regular season finale against the Bucks. It's the right thing to do, even against the backdrop of possibly taking the 3 spot from Dallas. We probably lose no intensity as a team because Kevin played 20 minutes instead of 40. I think coach struck a fine balance in the final game. And yes, America was isolationist during Germany's push across the eastern world. So that doesn't serve as a good analogy for an NBA team's throwing caution to the wind and taking the bull(s?) by the horns. Hope the inaccuracy wasn't so offensive as to drive a devoted listener away. We always enjoy your take on the shows, and look forward to hearing from you. Go Thunder!

You're right, Mark, that analogy was overstated and was just a misdirected attempt at hyperbole. I apologize. And, of course, you've got the history right, it was really Pearl Harbor that spurred us into the conflict, not a sense of heroism.

I should have looked more to a positive example, such as the mindset the Lakers seem to have. Even though they are entering as the 2nd seed and have stumbled lately, they still possess an unshakable confidence that they can beat any other team whether they are at home or on the road. So please accept this as an official correction. I should have said that the great sports teams thrive in these moments of greatest struggle, and have no room in their minds for even a shadow of doubt or fear. I feel that tinkering with a team's record at any point diminishes this kind of confidence.

JimB, the day your coach makes even a single decision because it's what makes the fans want, that's the day you fire your coach.

Anyone see the Lakers-Spurs game?? Anyone think that the Spurs want to play the Lakers in the second round after that? Anyone think that Popovich knows a thing or two about basketball? Duncan, Parker and Ginobili combined for ZERO, I repeat, ZERO minutes. The Spurs, risking losing home court in the finals against the Bulls still chose to guarantee that they don't meet the Lakers in the second round.

Ok mark some of us are writing on cell phones why we are in college, but I guess feel free to post your phd. on here anytime. I would love to see how smart you really are, and I believe we have scored 120 in two consecutive games. Don't recall that happening with Green who has proven he can't play as a 2nd string three. Boston will not sign him back. You say our offense is not as good Westbrook and durants shooting were horrible during the time you posted that. So I don't think you can say our offense is struggling, when our two best scorers were in a slump. Just my opinion just like you are entitled to yours.

Brent, I am in total agreement with your opinions in this episode. However, you missed one very important factor which, I feel, supersedes all those you mentioned. That is, the fan, and the athletes responsibility to him (or her). Without the fan buying tickets, apparel, food, drinks, etc; and their support of the sponsors, these athletes would not exist....could not exist. Because of that, they have a responsibility to give the fan the best show they can (they are entertainers after all).
That means playing all games, and playing to win.

I didn't mean to imply that the players should intentionally lose. I suggested that the coaches should play the end of the bench instead of the starters. If we win with those guys then so be it. I find it funny that you use the Manning example where they clearly didn't ask him to throw the game, they used their back ups. On top of that, it was a terrible example because they sacrificed a chance at the record. They weren't just competing with the rest of the league that year, they were competing with every other team that has ever played in the NFL. If they go undefeated, they aren't just champs, they are the best team of all time. If the Thunder had 71 wins, I wouldn't be arguing to bench our guys.

Finally, to prove that your perspective is completely hypocritical...Why do teams shorten their rotation in the playoffs? Clealy, it's because the shorter rotation gives them a better chance to win the specific game at hand. So why play with a longer rotation in the regular season, when we agree that a shorter rotation will give you a better chance on this specific night? Because of the big picture. Clearly, you agree that you make in-game decisions that aren't the best decision when it comes to winning the game at hand but rather it has to do with the bigger picture. Clearly, by not playing Westbrook 42 minutes last night, we had less chance of winning. Therefore, the number one factor in determining in game minutes is not winning the game at hand but rather what will allow us to win the most overall. It happens all the time in the NFL, no one complains about it. Benching our guys is the more correct decision in the big picture.

Hitler?? Are you kidding me? You are comparing the NBA playoff seeding to the holocaust?? I find that a little insulting.
And even sadder is how incorrect your analogy is. The US DID wait to enter WWII. At the time the US had an isolationist policy,

Well, anonymous, our offense did look pretty amazing last night against the two time defending champs. And we beat Denver twice and that IS good enough for me. I don't know why you so called anonymous people can't read. I don't think anywhere in my post did I complain about the team. I love the team, I am so happy that we traded away Krstic and Green and I totally prefer the Ibaka/Perkins combo. I was just being honest. Our offense isn't as good, I think anyone who disagrees with that is seeing the team through Thunder-colored glasses. Our overall team is far superior and even morons like you would agree with that. I don't know why I am even posting this, judging by your spelling and grammar it's obvious that you are an illiterate fool and will never be able to understand this anyways.

Well mark our offense looked pretty amazing against the two time defending champions. Is 120 points enough for you. And we beat Denver twice is that good enough for you. Idk why so of you so called thunder fans complain all the Time you are goin to lose some and win some and right now idk know how you would not put the thunder in the top four in the league not the just the west. Perkins has added a mental toughness that a lot of teams do not have.

Can't find any stats?? How about this one, in Westbrook's first 71 games he shot 44.4%, in his last 7 36.2%.

Guys, throw out March, we played 4 games against teams with winning records. We were going to win those games before the trade or after. Stats were going to be predictably inflated so when you say we have been trending offensively the same as before or slightly better, that's not a good sign. Clearly, against good defensive teams, Westbrook doesn't have nearly the operating room that he had before. You can comfort yourself with some meaningless stats but the plain truth is that our offense isn't as good.

The good news is that our defense and toughness has DRAMATICALLY improved! Our offense is slightly worse but our D is smothering. IMHO, the Thunder are at the very least, in the top 5 in the league.

Great points guys! I hadn't yet put my finger on what seems so different since the trade. But you're right - we had seen the same offense (Westbrook/Durant/Green) for 2.5 seasons. Without Green, we look completely different on both ends of the floor.

As for Perkins, I think he needs to tone it down. He claims that if he pushes a guy and doesn't get pushed back, he's won; I think that's ridiculous. Tough does not equal smart. There are times where you have to stand up for yourself, and I'm glad there is someone besides KD to stand up against the fake tough guys of the league. Keep pushing players around but don't mouth off to the refs. They're not going to be intimidated. He also needs to work on his shot! We got a shot clock violation against the Nuggets because he missed on a wide open look from the top of the key. Any pro should be able to get rim from there.

Maybe I'll publish some of these thoughts in an editorial. And I agree about the playoff seed, we win every game we can because "You play to win the game." We'll win because we're winners, and that's the bottom line.

Is it tank time? I don't care what all of the power rankings say about the Nuggets, I would rather play them than Portland. Portland is really big and can rebound and they have LaMarcus who is better than anybody on the Nuggets. I thought with the exception of Raymond Felton, the Nuggets couldn't get a good shot all night. Obviously, they have to control Felton and I think that they can but didn't you get the feeling watching that game that if the Thunder slows Felton down just a little, the Thunder win by 20.

The other added benefit of tanking is avoiding the Lakers in the 2nd round. Again, don't care about records, the Lakers are the better team.

I hate to say it but I think the Mavs are trying to get the 4 seed. They are losing every game and we can't let them take it from us. Let's lose the rest on purpose.

I think the only reason that the rip move is getting so much attention is because Durant uses it to perfection. The move is not that easy to do, or we would see alot more use of it. Also, Durant is a scoring machine and the only way to stop him is for the defender to stay right on him. Those defenders that know what their doing, like Artest, can still keep Durant wrapped up but can limit the effectiveness of the rip move. In regards to the move not being a shooting move why is it that Durant almost always hits the backboard and rim and on occasion actually makes it? If the ball never hit the backboard or rim I might agree that it was not a shooting motion but I've seen guys driving to the basket throw up a ball behind their back looking down arched like they were a ballerina and not even make it up to the boards and that is still a a "shooting motion". Any guy in the NBA can throw up garbage and make more of those than the regular Joe can using perfect form. If the rule was changed I think Durant would still find a way to score and people need to quit crying about it.
